Our team of professionals who work with foundations and non-profit organizations has decades of combined experience working with organizations ranging from start-ups to large internationals. Having worked inside these organizations before joining us, they thoroughly understand the challenges many non-profits face. At Westian Global, a commitment to charity is deeply engrained in our corporate culture
Extended time horizons
Foundations tend to have time horizons that extend over many, many years, so rather than fixating on short-term market movements, their goals are more focused on longer-term sustainability.
Long term missions
As with private investors, the inclination of many non-profit boards is to focus on recent investment performance. With our clients, we concentrate more on how the organization’s raison d'etre is advanced by the investment and stewardship of its donations. Contributors donate to a non-profit because of what the organization is trying to ultimately achieve, which is not generally possible in the short term. Organizations should therefore invest to support their long-term mission.
Reducing the impact of market volatility
In a downward trending market, non-profits may be affected by three simultaneous effects:
- (a) a fall in underlying investment portfolio values
- (b) a more challenging fundraising environment with patrons reducing donation levels and potential donors becoming harder to find
- (c) increasing financial demands as funding requests rise in a slowing economy. We work with clients to create portfolios that manage and withstand the ups and downs of market values
Process-led investment approach
Westian Global and the non-profit boards and committees we work with all have fiduciary responsibilities. We welcome that responsibility to our clients and endeavor to help them become better at what they do. Achieving the fiduciary duty means focusing on our processes. We use an unemotional, process-led investment approach that has weathered many storms in the financial markets and can be communicated quickly and efficiently to all investors.
Our Investment Committee
Managing wealth for non-profits means taking a longer-term view than is possible for individual investors. We aim to help our clients grow value to sustain their spending goals in perpetuity. Consequently, our investment team develops portfolios that maximize long-term returns, minimize risk, and keep costs down. We use a quantitative, factor-based approach to tilt portfolios towards and away from certain factors to produce long-term investment returns higher than relevant benchmarks. We create international portfolios that are widely diversified across and within major asset classes. Where appropriate, we use less liquid, private asset classes such as private equity, infrastructure, real estate, and credit.
